Mali
Since its launch in December 2006, tthe Mali ASP project has been progressing satisfactorily with a high level of implementation capacity and wide civil society inclusion. Progress on the ground includes:- The inventory of 1,100 tons of obsolete pesticides,
- Emergency safeguarding of high risk sites,
- Implementation of prevention activities such as the review of the 2002 Pesticides Management and Control Bill, and
- Communication and awareness-raising activities.
- An MoU was signed with NGOs which provided over US$150,000 support for the national NGO network costs as well as specific activities, including community-based monitoring, independent monitoring, IPM farmer field schools and awareness-raising. An experienced international Technical Advisor for Disposal (TAD) is in place assisting the project to prepare for disposal of the country stocks.

Country Information
Mali, officially the Republic of Mali, is the seventh largest country of Africa, bordering Algeria on the north, Niger on the east, Burkina Faso and the Côte d'Ivoire on the south, Guinea on the south-west, and Senegal and Mauritania on the west. Divided into 8 regions and 1 district, Mali has a total land area of 1,240,192 km² of which an estimated 65% is desert or semi-desert. French is the official language of Mail. With an estimated population of 13,518,000, 80% of the labour force is engaged in farming and fishing. Cotton is the country’s main export, with increasing interest in gold mining (2005 figures).
