Country Information

Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is located in Western Africa on the Gulf of Guinea, and is the most populous country in Africa with a recorded 140,003,542 inhabitants. With a total land area of 923,768 km², Nigeria borders the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Nigeria is divided into 36 states and one federal capital and comprises a varied landscape: the rainforest, the Lagos estuary and savanna in the middle and southwest; the Obudu Hills in the southeast; the beaches in the south; and the Sahel and the encroaching Sahara in the extreme north. An estimated 60% of Nigerians are employed in the agricultural sector, producing groundnuts, palm oil, cocoa, coconut, citrus fruits, maize, pearl millet, cassava, yams and sugar cane. Since the discovery of oil, the agricultural sector has declined, with the worlds 10th largest proven reserves, Nigeria is the 12th largest producer of petroleum in the world.
